Why Choosing the Right Rental Car Insurance Matters
In New Zealand, third-party car insurance is not a legal requirement. That means if you’re hit by an uninsured driver, you could be left covering the costs yourself.
With an estimated 7–8% of vehicles on New Zealand roads uninsured, having the right rental car insurance is essential. At RentX, we make it simple and transparent so you can drive with confidence, knowing you’re protected.
Here’s how we keep it fair and stress-free:
- Xpress Cover included with every rental
- Upgrade to Xtra or Xclusive for added protection
- No hidden fees or complicated fine print
Because car hire should be about enjoying the journey—not worrying about what-ifs.

How It Works
When booking your vehicle online, you’ll be prompted to choose your preferred insurance option. The cost of your cover is added to your rental total upfront—no surprises at pickup.
If an incident occurs, we’ll guide you through the claims process and help you every step of the way.
The bond (if applicable) is securely held during your rental period and returned in full, provided the vehicle is returned in the same condition.
We believe in transparency—so you’ll always know exactly what’s covered, and what’s not.
FAQ’S
What does a Liability Limit and Bond mean?
The liability limit is the maximum amount you’re responsible for in case of damage or loss to the vehicle. The bond is a security deposit held during your rental period, which is released after the vehicle is returned in good condition.

Our insurance typically covers accidental damage to the rental vehicle, theft, fire, and third-party liability. The level of cover depends on the insurance tier you select at booking.

No, personal injury is not covered under our vehicle insurance. We recommend arranging separate travel insurance for personal medical coverage while travelling.
Does your insurance cover consequential costs?
